Aster Models for Life History Analysis
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a new class of statistical models, designed for life history analysis of plants and animals, that allow joint analysis of data on survival and reproduction over multiple years, allow for variables having different probability distributions, and correctly account for the dependence of variables on earlier variables. We illustrate their utility with an analysis of data taken from an experimental study of Echinacea angustifolia sampled from remnant prairie populations in western Minnesota. These models generalize both generalized linear models and survival analysis. The joint distribution is factored as a product of conditional distributions, each an exponential family with the conditioning variable being the sample size of the conditional distribution. The model may be heterogeneous, each conditional distribution being a different exponential family. We show that the joint distribution is a flat exponential family and derive its canonical parameters, Fisher information, and other properties. These models are implemented in an R package ‘aster’ available from CRAN. Some key words: Conditional Exponential Family; Flat Exponential Family; Generalized Linear Model; Graphical Model; Maximum Likelihood.

Unifying life-history analyses for inference of fitness and population growth.
The lifetime fitnesses of individuals comprising a population determine its numerical dynamics, and genetic variation in fitness results in evolutionary change. This dual importance of individual fitness is well understood, but empirical fitness records generally violate the assumptions of standard statistical approaches. This problem has undermined comprehensive study of fitness and impeded em...

An Application of Envelope Methodology and Aster Models
Precise estimation of expected Darwinian fitness is a central component of life history analysis. Our methods provide precise estimation by incorporating general envelope methodology into the aster modeling framework. This level of precision provided from out methods allow researchers to draw stronger conclusions about the driving forces of Darwinian fitness from their life history analyses tha...
متن کاملPopulation dynamics of diploid and hexaploid populations of a perennial herb.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Despite the recent enormous increase in the number of studies on polyploid species, no studies to date have explored the population dynamics of these taxa. It is thus not known whether the commonly reported differences in single life-history traits between taxa of different ploidy levels result in differences in population dynamics. METHODS This study explores differences ...
متن کاملRapid evolution of morphology and adaptive life history in the invasive California wild radish (Raphanus sativus) and the implications for management
Understanding the evolution and demography of invasive populations may be key for successful management. In this study, we test whether or not populations of the non-native, hybrid-derived California wild radish have regionally adapted to divergent climates over their 150-year history in California and determine if population demographic dynamics might warrant different region-specific strategi...
